With approximately 54 million Americans living with disabilities, exploring and understanding factors that might facilitate or hinder acceptance of one’s disability may be an important area of research. But what exactly is the relationship between religious/spiritual attitudes and acceptance or lack of acceptance of disability for people with neuromuscular disorders?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have announced plans to establish a Joint NIH-FDA Leadership Council, with the goal of shortening the time it takes to move promising therapies through the regulatory process and into the hands of waiting patients.

'Muscle Gene Therapy' brings together the latest research in this promising field

MDA grantee Dongsheng Duan has published a book on the latest advances in gene therapy for muscle disease, particularly muscular dystrophies. Duan, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Missouri, served as editor of the book Muscle Gene Therapy and co-authored two of its 15 chapters. Duan is currently researching gene transfer therapy in dogs. About the new book

Tests show the myostatin inhibitor ACE031 can safely increase muscle size, a finding that could benefit many forms of neuromuscular disease

ACE031, a laboratory-modified protein developed by Acceleron Pharma of Cambridge, Mass., has shown promise as a therapy to increase muscle mass, based on results of a trial in healthy volunteers. The company will now test it in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).
