Researchers Studying Children's Use of Mobility Devices

If you're the parent of a young child who uses a power mobility device, researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children — both in western Canada — are interested in hearing from you. The study is open to U.S. residents.

Debbie Field, a doctoral student in rehabilitation science, and Bill Miller, a professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at UBC, are conducting a Power Mobility Toolkit study, probing the perceptions of parents, therapists and researchers about children's use of power mobility devices, such as power wheelchairs.

Participating in the study as a parent involves filling out approximately four electronic questionnaires over a period of eight months. Each questionnaire is estimated to take less than an hour to complete.

Each participant will receive an honorarium of 100 Canadian dollars.

To participate in the study

To participate as a parent in the Power Mobility Toolkit study, you must have a child who:

• is between 18 months and 12 years of age and has a long-term mobility limitation;
• has used a power wheelchair or other power mobility device for at least six months on a regular (at least weekly) basis; and
• can maneuver the power mobility device by himself or herself for at least 30 minutes a day.
