At the Academy Awards in Hollywood on Feb. 22, MDA National Chairman Jerry Lewis received one of the Academy’s greatest honors — the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
The award recognizes an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry. Past recipients include Paul Newman, Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck and Bob Hope.
Statue and park honoring Mattie Stepanek are dedicated

A wonderful tribute to a beloved former MDA National Goodwill Ambassador is now reality.
The Mattie Stepanek Park in Rockville, Md., was officially dedicated in October for over 1,000 audience members, and statues of Mattie and his service dog Micah were unveiled.

Upon first seeing Billy Gilman and Luke Christie together, it’s impossible not to notice their special brand of camaraderie.
They ham it up, casting one-liners off each others’ remarks, their rapport and comedic timing guaranteed to get a laugh. Through their work for MDA, they’ve formed a bond of friendship, and more. In so many ways, they both enthuse, they’re like brothers.

Abbey Umali and her family have been familiar presences on the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon for the past two years. Now this winsome and charismatic 8-year-old from California steps further into the spotlight as MDA’s 2008 National Goodwill Ambassador.

I’m 44 years old, and was officially diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) at age 19, so you might say this article is 25 years in the making! I can tell you with absolute certainty that over these 25 years I’ve learned that “we’re all in this together.”
