This is my last Keeping in Touch column for Quest magazine. After nearly 55 years of service to MDA, I decided to retire, effective December 31, 2011. Curing muscular dystrophy has been a labor of love for me and will continue to be a focus in my life. Although it’s been a month since the close of the 2011 Telethon, the glow still lingers. The brand-new, six-hour, prime-time event was a huge success, thanks to the dedication and hard work of thousands of MDA supporters across the country. The faster pace of the shorter show — and the caliber of celebrity talent it showcased — were a joy to watch. Our dedicated MDA sponsors were superb and the...

As you may already know, for 45 years our annual Labor Day Telethon was a 21½-hour fundraising spectacular. It’s now time to launch an all-new Telethon era. This year, the Telethon will be a six-hour show seen in prime time nationwide on Sunday, Sept. 4, broadcast live from 6 p.m. to midnight in the Eastern time zone and from 6 p.m. to midnight via tape delay in all other time zones. Forty-five years ago, a great man named Bob Ross, MDA’s then-executive director, dreamed that the power of television could be harnessed in behalf of families devastated by neuromuscular diseases — diseases about which modern medicine had no understanding, let alone defense.

The renewal of hope that comes with spring will be reflected in the gathering of several important committees of experts who advise the Association on advancement of its top-notch research and services programs.

An American wit once wrote, “An optimist stays up to see the New Year in. A pessimist waits to make sure the old one leaves.” As MDA rides out the difficult economy and its effect on fundraising and our programs, we’re very happy to see the old year leave. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. But as we look at the research progress that was made in the past year, and our plans to expand on...
