IPC ‘human backpack’ strap

A lightweight, portable device originally designed to evacuate wounded soldiers from the battleground has drawn the attention of caregivers for people with mobility disorders. The Injured Personnel Carrier or IPC, from the Israeli/American firm Agilite, is a heavy-duty strap with snap connectors that can be placed around an individual and used to hoist and comfortably carry the person on your back. In addition to the U.S. Marines and British Special Forces, the IPC is being ordered by caregivers to carry loved ones in and out of a pool, or up a hiking trail, or as an emergency evacuation device. Price: $94.95 (Quest readers — 10 percent discount with coupon code IPC%10). Agilite, (703) 659-0572, custom@agilitegear.com.

All-Out Universal Opener

This multifunction device provides added leverage when opening prepackaged food items, a problem for many with hand weakness. The All-Out Universal Opener features a blunt V-shaped prong to open box tops with glue-sealed flaps; a hook to lift pull-tabs on cans and poke through cellophane covered food trays; and openers for both twist and non-twist (crimped) caps. The shape accommodates several grasping positions, making it easy for users to find the method that feels and works best for them. Price: $11.95. Maddak Inc., (973) 628-7600.

Lavin Lift Strap

The Lavin Lift Strap works with most patient lifts (such as a Hoyer lift) to help caregivers safely care for bedridden loved ones without lifting or rolling them, reducing the chance of injury for both parties. The machine washable straps are basically slings for each leg that — once attached to a mechanical lift (not included) — securely lift the lower half of a person lying on his or her back, making it easier to provide hygiene and other care. A training video can be viewed at Lavinlift.com. Price: $160 per pair. Lavin Lift Straps, (888) 545-5438, Inquiries@Lavinlift.com.

Amovida Motion Comfort+ wheelchair cushion

Amovida's cushion offers optimal weight distribution, providing stability, comfort and pressure sore protection. The surface of the cushion contains a layer of 3D mesh, guaranteeing air circulation to help regulate temperature and prevent moisture buildup. A unique phase-change material stores heat when body temperature rises, releasing it gradually when the body cools. The foam base absorbs shocks and vibrations from the ground and the wheelchair, protecting the user’s back and spine. No fitting or adjustment is needed, just put in place and use. Price: $395 (insurance reimbursable). Amovida, (800) 741-0078.
