Adapted driving system

The Remote Electronic Horizontal Steering System (RESS) from Drive-Master features a 1-1 ratio that responds the same as the original steering wheel; adjustable mounting options; and the ability for other drivers to use the original steering wheel with the flick of a toggle switch. An emergency backup system provides power if factory power steering fails. Drive-Master says standard factory power steering requires about 40 ounces of effort to operate, while its Low Effort, Zero Effort Steering Modification (LEESS) requires only 20-24 ounces (low effort) or 6-8 ounces (no effort). A touchscreen console (Proxima) allows operation of functions such as ignition start and stop, door locks, windows, mirrors, temperature, etc.

Prices vary widely depending on the driver’s needs, but a basic system starts at $7,000. Drive-Master, (973) 808-9709.

CoughAssist T70 (airway clearance device)

CoughAssist T70 clears secretions from the lungs by gradually applying positive air pressure (insufflation) and then rapidly shifting to negative air pressure (exsufflation), simulating a deep, natural cough. Air is delivered through a face mask, mouthpiece, or an adapter that works with an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube. Cough-Trak, a unique triggering feature with automatic sensitivity, enables the device to synchronize with the user’s breathing pattern for enhanced breath delivery and provides users with more control of their own therapy.

Price: $6,600. Philips Respironics.

LIQUA-sheet keeps mattresses dry

An effective way to protect mattresses from urinary accidents, LIQUA-sheet is made of three separate and durable materials. The top layer is flexible, breathable poly-mesh fabric that wicks moisture and enhances evaporation, helping to guard against skin breakdown. The inner core is quilted polyester batting for maximum absorbency. The third layer is a soft and flexible impermeable barrier that, unlike plastic, doesn’t rustle when the sleeper changes position. Machine washable and dryer safe even with daily laundering, the sheet is available in twin, twin XL, double and queen sizes.

Price starts at $97. LIQUAGUARD Solutions, (888) 251-4378.

PEPocket (portable extra pocket)

No pockets … No problem. The PEPocket puts the days of fumbling for a cell phone, travel documents or glasses behind you. Measuring 7.25 inches long by 5.25 inches wide and suspended by a 27-inch fabric-covered elastic, the color block pockets come in black/blue, black/coral, and black with copper and light gray for men.

Price: $15. Granny Jo Products, (863) 899-1654.

Puppies, ponies and piglets; buffaloes, bears and bunnies; and some tough little ninja warrior hamsters all can be at your child’s command with AbleNet’s line of switch-adapted electronic toys that can be controlled via an adapted switch (not included).

Prices range from $49 for a Penguin Race game to $119 for a Fisher-Price Imaginext Dinosaur. AbleNet, (800) 322-0956.
